The Rule Behind It

Make the action smaller, not the promise bigger. “Do ten minutes” usually beats “I will completely change my life from Monday.”
Separate real limits from emotional resistance. Illness, injury, sleep deprivation and emergencies are real. “I cannot be bothered” is usually a signal to simplify the action.
Do not wait to feel ready. Motivation often turns up after you begin. The first useful action is usually the hardest part.
Keep your standards realistic. A rough day can still contain one useful win. That is enough to keep the identity of someone who follows through.
